What Happens at Your First Chiropractic Appointment?
If you have never visited a chiropractor before, you may be unsure about what to expect. Your first chiropractic appointment is primarily an opportunity to discuss your concerns, complete a thorough assessment and determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you.

1. Discussing your health history
Your chiropractor will ask about your current symptoms, when they began and how they affect your daily activities.
You may also be asked about:
Previous injuries or accidents
Your general health and medical history
Medications or existing health conditions
Your work, exercise and daily routines
Any previous treatment you have received
What you hope to achieve through care
Providing accurate information helps your chiropractor assess you safely and appropriately.
2. Completing a physical assessment
Your assessment will depend on your symptoms and health history. It may include checking your:
Posture and movement
Spinal and joint mobility
Muscles and areas of tenderness
Orthopedic Testing
Strength, reflexes or sensation
Balance or functional movements
You can ask questions or let your chiropractor know if any part of the assessment feels uncomfortable.
3. Explaining the findings
After the assessment, your chiropractor will explain what they found in clear language. They will discuss whether chiropractic care may be suitable, the available options and any relevant benefits or risks.
If your symptoms require further investigation or another type of healthcare, you may be referred to your GP or another appropriate provider.
4. Will you be adjusted during the first visit?
Chiropractic treatment may be offered at the first appointment when it is considered appropriate and you are comfortable proceeding. However, treatment is not automatic.
Your chiropractor should explain the proposed care and obtain your informed consent first. You are always welcome to ask questions, decline a technique or change your mind.
5. Can a chiropractor lodge an ACC claim?
If your symptoms are connected to an accident or injury, your chiropractor may be able to lodge an ACC claim on your behalf. ACC makes the final decision about whether an injury is covered.
Tell your chiropractor how and when the injury occurred, and bring your existing ACC claim number if one has already been created.
What should you wear or bring?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily. You may also want to bring:
Details of relevant medications
Previous scan or imaging reports
Your ACC claim number, if applicable
Any questions you would like answered
